Riddlesbrood Honored at the 11th Language Creation Conference

An Evening of Theater, Linguistic Wizardry, and Recognition in College Park, Maryland

On April 12th, 2025, the halls of the University of Maryland buzzed with linguistic creativity and intellectual enthusiasm as over 200 attendees gathered for the 11th Language Creation Conference (LCC11)—a global event hosted by the Language Creation Society (LCS). Held in the H.J. Patterson Hall, Room 2130, within the Department of Linguistics, the conference brought together conlangers, linguists, authors, and language enthusiasts from around the world to celebrate and explore the art and science of constructed languages (conlangs). Past conferences have been held in such varied and vibrant locations as Los Angeles, London (UK), and Montreal, with each gathering offering a unique blend of scholarly presentations, artistic showcases, and cultural exchange. This year, for the first time, the conference brought theatrical performance directly into the heart of the event—and Riddlesbrood was front and center.

The New Years Tape

I write this account with trembling hands, not out of remorse, but as a warning. If you value your sanity, heed my words and leave this tale unfinished. There are truths too horrifying to behold, and I—Professor T. Halberd of Extempory College, scholar of ancient linguistics and gender studies—am a man undone by such experiences! It was New Year’s Eve when this all began, though that night feels distant, like a half-remembered nightmare. I was walking home, alone as usual, through the quiet streets of Haddonfield. Snow crunched underfoot, muffling the slight wheezing of my breath. Fireworks whispered in the distance, though they brought no joy to me. I’ve never been one for celebrations, dear reader. My colleagues barely tolerate me, and my students mock me when they think I’m out of earshot; yet, I’ve made peace with solitude, as such is the cost of genius.

National Touring Theater Journeys to Roanoke VA!

Our Traveling Theater adventure began in Stratford, NJ, where our headquarters buzzed with activity. Preparing for a show as elaborate as A Christmas Carol requires meticulous organization. Costumes, props, and set pieces filled every inch of our space as Kathleen Tegen and Shannon Long finalized their stunning designs. Each piece was carefully packed to ensure its safe arrival. Meanwhile, the set—crafted to transport audiences to Victorian England—was disassembled and loaded into two trucks and a trailer. This impressive logistical feat was coordinated by our stage managers, Brian Albert, Kevin Ebner and Cadence Tegen, who ensured every item was accounted for. With everything packed, the cast and crew gathered early on December 12th for a final checklist. The trucks were secured, the trailer hitched, and our caravan set off for the six-hour journey to Roanoke, VA. The road ahead was long, (And rainy!) but the energy was high as we anticipated the magic we were about to create.

Riddlesbrood Touring Theater Company Brings Adventure to Philly Children’s Festival

Yesterday, on September 22, 2024, Riddlesbrood Touring Theater Company proudly participated in the highly anticipated Philly Children's Festival held at Polanka Park Picnic Ground, (3258 Knights Road, Bensalem, PA). As one of the most exciting and family-friendly events in the area, the festival was a wonderful day for kids of all ages, and Riddlesbrood's unique brand of entertainment brought the crowd on a swashbuckling adventure to remember. The event was filled with fun activities, including kids’ games, jump rope challenges, bouncy houses, finger painting, and so much more! Families from all over gathered to enjoy the lively atmosphere, but one of the biggest highlights of the day was when Riddlesbrood rolled in with their signature Castle Bus—a 4x4 custom muscle truck that transforms into an outdoor stage. The moment the Castle Bus made its grand appearance, excitement rippled through the crowd, as everyone knew they were in for a special treat.

Celebrating Freedom and Community: Riddlesbrood's Enchanting Presence at the Historic Smithville Fourth of July Parade 2024

Riddlesbrood Touring Theater Company has been a proud participant in the Historic Smithville Fourth of July parade since 2002. Over the years, their presence has become a cherished tradition, eagerly anticipated by parade-goers. Some past floats have featured Peter Pan (2023), Alice in Wonderland (2022), Frankenstein (2016), Harken (2018), Pirates (2002 & 2011), the circus (2012) and even the Jersey Devil (2003)!  This year, the Riddlesbrood float did not disappoint. It was a vibrant and elaborate display, featuring beloved characters from our mainstage performance of "The Wizard of Oz," including Glinda the Good Witch (Kathleen jack Tegen), the Cowardly Lion (Jerry Long), Dorothy (Kaylie Leon), the Tin Man (Justin Hlifka), and also a few of the kids! (Amelie Connelly, Arianna Brown and Tegan Long, Scott Albert). The float, adorned with a backdrop of the infamous house that fell on the Wicked Witch of the East, was a testament to the creativity and dedication of the Riddlesbrood team.

How a Typical Murder Mystery Party Goes

Setting the Stage: Approximately an hour before guests arrive, the entertainment company's actors (in this case, the amazing Riddlesbrood!) appear and begin to set the stage for the night's mystery. This setup involves arranging props, costumes, sets, lights, sound systems, and microphones. Remember that you can always choose a theme that fits your event!  The extent of the setup varies based on the chosen package. While smaller groups of 60 or less might opt for a budget package with fewer accouterments, the standard package—ideal for groups of 60-150 (this is our more common audience size)—includes many of the expected bells and whistles such as lights, sound system, wireless microphones, a backdrop, and other tricks of the trade. All preparations are typically completed in just under an hour.

Our '911' Dinner Theater Show- We will Never Forget

It was around 11 a.m., and I remember calling the owner of the theater franticly to check if the show booked that afternoon was cancelled.   The proprietor, Matt Custer, was trying to get in touch with the senior group to see if they were still coming, but the phone system was only working sporadically due to the high volume of calls.  We all assumed that the show would be cancelled, considering the shocking images that we were seeing on every channel.  The sizable group was also from New York and they were supposed to have 160 people attend the show that day, surely given the situation they would want to be with their families.  However, by around 1p.m., we realized that we had a big problem.  The group had come down the day before and was staying at a secluded campground that had no radio, TV or phones.   

Voyages in Verbiage: Delving into the Depths of a diabolical dialect!

To whomever might chance upon these musings, I, Professor T Halberd of Extempory College's Ancient Linguistics Department, have had the most peculiar and revealing of days. While wandering a local Walmart parking lot this morning, as is my habit to draw inspiration from the mundane, I stumbled upon a revelation. On an aged bus's front bumper, I discerned a line of characters — symbols that I have been researching for years. The very key to the lost language tied to an ancient and ominous cult. The bus itself was a treasure trove, filled to the brim with equipment and peculiar garments. Acting on impulse, I snuck aboard. Finding a hiding spot at the rear of the vehicle, I nestled myself amidst a pile of old-fashioned women's costumes. (The men’s costumes smelled much worse!) There, under the protective layers of brocade and lace, I lay in wait.

A Strange Hymn to Pan Discovered!

Deep in the heart of Leeds Point, New Jersey, an intrepid archaeologist stumbled upon an enigmatic novelty concealed within the oddest of hiding places—an old tire, forgotten amidst the eerie woods. Within this heinous hoop lay a manuscript, aged and mysterious, its pages adorned with cryptic symbols and a drawling of the Jersey Devil. It was as if the pigmy pines whispered secrets of a forgotten age. Undeterred by the strangeness that pervaded the air, a defrocked doctor by the name of T Halberd meticulously deciphered the ancient script. To his amazement, the esoteric language unraveled before his eyes, revealing itself as none other than Riddlesdiculous, a tongue used by the inner circle of the Riddlesbrood Touring Theater. The contents of the manuscript, however, were far more astonishing.

Behold, dear reader, for I shall now regale you with the tale of a mysterious and enigmatic troupe known as “Riddlesbrood”. A group of eclectic performers who possess a remarkable ingenuity and a penchant for the bizarre, the strange, and the outlandish. Cheers and Good Health to you my fellow intellectuals!  It is I, Professor Halbert of Extempory College's Ancient Linguistics Department. I have some foreboding intelligence that anxiety and discomposure compels me to disgorge into your hungry yet loyal ears.  I have found proof, incontrovertible proof, that a supernatural cryptid BEAST lurks in our midst—and more then that; this creature is adored by a clan of thespians in our own garden state! This will constitute irrefutable authentication that Riddlesbrood is in fact a devious sect bent on nefarious melodramatic acts! You see, I was going about my normal daily activities when a whim came over me to watch some random corporate training videos (A feeling that strikes me quite often). To further this urge, I borrowed a friend’s car, a 1977 Cadillac Coupe DeVille that he had lovingly restored.  I did this so that I could peacefully enjoy listening to a Public Radio Station, whose programming is similar to corporate training videos AND the most reliable source of truth out there.

A Christmas Carol...In Riddlesdiculous

Greetings, fellow seekers of incomprehensibilities! Tis I, Dr. T Halberd, with a few new discoveries you should be made aware of.  As I am a linguist, philosopher and amateur Minecraft player, my time is at a premium. Which is sadly why I just recently broke up with my girlfriend.  We only dated for 2 days and three and a half hours…yet emotionally I’m devastated.  I thought it was forever, but she just could not handle my courageous pursuit of hidden occult truths!  Anyway, I found myself sulking around the town feeling sorry for myself.  And to make matters worse, it was Christmas Time, when everyone else seems to be so damn happy!  I hate it when I see happy people.  When I walked by I noticed that there were decorations all over the town and some sort of holiday fair going on.  I found it particularly annoying and deemed it a likely ‘super spreader event’. However, as I wondered off I heard the sound of Christmas carols being sung nearby. But these discordant tunes were far different from any musicality I had ever heard before.  I decided to sneak up and find out more.  It was coming from a small puppet stage that was tucked into an ally.  There were a few children there listening so I decided to stagger down the cobblestone road to get closer.

Overmuch on Idioms (In Brooding)

I found a new clue to how these rascals move about our world unseen! You see, since the Pandemic began in the early months of 2020, I was deemed ‘non-essential’ by the faculty and was ejected from my lavish office.  However, my superiors had no idea of how important my research was for their safety! I felt duty bound to sneak in each night and continue my groundbreaking efforts for their own good.  However, I saw a sign on the wall that said ‘Masks required at ALL times’. Even though I was alone and cloaked in darkness, I felt compelled to obey.  But as I was now without employment and also without means to purchase masks, I risked constant infection!  Fortunately, nearby there were two grocery stores, an Aldi and a Whole Foods. Moreover, their parking lots were littered with discarded paper masks.  Therefore, even though I'd been jabbed by all three pharmaceutical companies I decided I would recycle these masks both for the environment and my own health and safety.  Assuming that the patrons of Whole foods were more sophisticated and likeminded, I chose the masks I found there instead of the deplorable ones.  Fortunately, I found so many, I was able to wear three at a time!

On the day of the party, things started normal enough.  We loaded up for the show, turned on our GPS and took off in our van headed north for the event.  That’s when old “Murphy’s Law” began to rear its ugly head.

Greetings, fellow seekers of obscurities, it is I, Dr. T Halberd, with some new revelations about the secret cult in our midst!  For many years, I have been convinced of the existence of an underground order of augers and theurgists which operate in Southern New Jersey and sometimes well, well beyond.  What their nefarious objectives are, I cannot yet say, although their surreptitiousness implies, they have some devious malice in mind for us all! But to the point, a student brought a startling piece of new evidence to me in return for changing his grade, which I happily did.  The article he delivered was a small piece of wax-paper, partially burnt, which had abundant traces of pizza sauce upon it.  Instantaneously, I surmised that it was some critical piece of information that had been transmitted by a pizza delivery person—where the pizza itself, obscured the message until eaten.  I eagerly set about working out the meaning of the strange characters over two bottles of Château Lafite-Rothschild.

In every culture, society and lost civilization the names for the parts of the body tend to be the oldest of all words. Altering little over the eons and remain curiously static through many generations. Greetings, my name is Dr. T Halberd from Extempory College's Ancient Linguistics Department. Today I would like to share with you some of my newest findings concerning the enigmatic and underground group, for which there is no official name, yet I call Harkeens--from their strange symbol. I have uncovered a new and exciting piece of evidence which, I believe, will allow me to unlock more of their code-like language. This newest find is a rude diagram of a dismembered human body and on it, writings indicating the names of the different parts of the carcass.
